Welcome to Teradici PCoIP Cloud Licensing

As of Cloud Access Software 2.8, Teradici introduces cloud licensing to simplify the deployment and activation of Cloud Access licenses. Cloud licensing avoids the need to deploy and maintain a license server. Whether you’re a new Cloud Access Software administrator, or upgrading your existing Cloud Access Software deployment, licenses are now much easier to obtain and manage.

What does this change mean for you? Browse this list of frequently asked questions for answers:

Q

How is cloud licensing different from the previous licensing method?

A

Teradici PCoIP cloud licensing is a much simpler, cloud-friendly, session-based licensing method. There’s no need for you to install a license on each machine or instance or manage complicated license servers. Instead, you simply purchase a pool of license ‘entitlements’ to match your needs.

Q

How does the cloud licensing process work?

A

Your company or department is assigned one unique and confidential Cloud Access registration code. The licenses you purchase are associated with this code, but you can change the size of your license pool anytime you wish. Registration codes use the following format: X@Y (YUOIFUSD32@AB33-H372-D78E-78XX).

Q

How many cloud licenses should I have in my license pool?

A

Licenses are based on concurrent PCoIP sessions. This provides you with the flexibility to purchase the number of licenses you need based on your expected concurrent usage. For example, you can purchase one license for each user to ensure you have a license pool that will not run out of licenses or you can purchase only the number of licenses that you need for your anticipated concurrent usage.

Q

What if I need to use a license server?

A

Although Cloud Access Software now supports simple cloud licensing, the license server method will also continue to be supported. Using the license server method, each license you buy requires a unique activation code that must reside on a license server that you deploy and manage. Activation codes use the following format: A-B-C-D (AD33-8C72-78UE-A8YX ).

Q

How are license registration codes different from activation codes?

A

If you are using cloud licenses, you only require a registration code. Registration codes apply to cloud licenses and are unique to your company or department. Activation codes only apply to individual licenses installed on a license server.

Q

Which license method should I use for my Cloud Access deployment?

A

If your users have internet access from their host VMs, you should be using cloud licensing. It’s simple to deploy and easily managed, avoids the need for a license server, and supports internet proxy services.

If your users do not have internet access (and you cannot use a proxy), use a license server. Although the license server requires installation and maintenance, you can manage your licenses from a single location and easily license new VMs.

Q

Which firewall ports need to be open for licensing to work?

A

If you are using cloud based licensing then your agent will need access to the internet either by using port 443 or by setting up an internet proxy.  The URL used for licensing is https://teradici.compliance.flexnetoperations.com/.

If you are using a local licensing server, the ports that need to be configured are described here.

Q

Why was per-user instance locked licensing discontinued?

A

Instance-locked licenses required activation codes for each installation of the product, and processes for returning and reactivating licenses were complex. Cloud licensing also resolves license problems associated with deleting VMs, cloning host instances, and managing large numbers of activation codes.

Q

When do I use the registration code?

A

Registration is done the first time you install the software.

Q

How are licenses distributed?

A

Licenses are distributed via e-mail.   If you cannot find your license e-mail, enter a support ticket and a copy will be provided.

Q

How do I request a registration code if I have per-user instance locked licenses?

A

If you already own a per-user instance locked license, you can obtain a cloud license registration code by creating a Teradici support ticket to request your unique registration code.  When creating the request, include your old activation codes. Teradici will then provide you a cloud license registration code that will replace your old licenses. Sign into the support site to open a ticket.

Q

How do I migrate from a per-user instance locked licenses to the new cloud license registration code method?

A

If you were previously running Cloud Access Software with a per-user instance locked license, you can move to the new licensing scheme using the following instructions.

  1. Request a registration code from Teradici that will be replace your old license.
  2. Upgrade your Cloud Access Software to version 2.8 or later.
  3. Register your software using pcoip-register-host command
  4. Delete your old per-user instance locked license using the appactutil command

The video demonstrates the the exact steps to take.

Q

How to migrate from a local license server to cloud based licensing.

A

This video will show you how to upgrade Cloud Access Software with a local license server license, to cloud based licensing.

  1. Request a registration code from Teradici that will be replace your old license.
  2. Upgrade your Cloud Access Software to version 2.8 or later.
  3. Register your software using the pcoip-register-host command
  4. Remove the local licensing server configuration using the gpedit.msc command
  5. Delete your local License Server.

The video demonstrates the the exact steps to take.

Q

I'm seeing a back office server error when attempting to register.  How can I fix this?

A

If you had previously registered using a TRIAL evaluation key and are now moving to a new registration key, then you might experience a Back office Server error.  The output will look like this:

Error creating FNE capability response: [1,7E1,2,0[7000001C,71000034,250135]]
Server was not able to process request correctly. Server status: (Back office server error.)

If this happens, there are two ways to fix the problem.

  1. Create a new VM and re-register.
  2. If you would like to use your old VM, then Sign into the support site and open a ticket. Provide your registration code plus your name of the virtual machine that you are registering.  We will fix the problem on the back end server and move your old VM to the new license server.

Q

How do I install a local license server?

A

If you have a local license server activation code then this license needs to be installed on your active local license server.  The license activation instructions are here.  If you do not have an active local license server, then you will need to create one.  The administration manual for the local license server is here.
